    Subject:
    Liturgy

Liturgy for use of a cantor, beginning with Sabbath prayers (1-6) and followed by a miscellany of prayers (including those for the sick, for the reading of the Megilah, and before reading the haftarah on fast days [7-9]). The prayer for the king (5r) mentions Frederick II of Prussian, with a second hand adding a superlinear “Wilhelm” (presumably his son Frederick Wilhelm II). The “El Male’ Rahamim” prayer (6v) mentions the Chmielnicki pogroms of Lublin and Kurow, especially the flight of the Lublin community across the Vistula to Kurow in 1648-1649. The ornamentations include a headword with a crown (2v), a Prussian eagle (5r), and a fanfare and flags of Frederick’s battles (5r), likely dating the copying to after the First and Second Silesian Wars.
