    Esther Scroll

    Manuscript ID:
    Scrolls 39 (X.6)

    Place:
    Italy, Ancona

    Date:
Second half of the 18th century

    Description:
    Hand-painted Ink and gouache on parchment, 6 membranes, 21 text columns, 16 lines per column + benediction sheet 160 × 3350 mm (6.3 × 131.9 in.) + 160 × 288 (6.3 × 11.3 in.) Wooden roller, 305 mm (12.0 in.)

The first sheet of the scroll is trimmed into a decorative shape and painted with floral motifs. The text is written in square text columns that are enclosed in double bar frames.

The bold red and blue floral forms are found on other items of Judaica, such as ketubbot, created in Ancona during the second half of the 18th century. It is therefore very likely that this Esther scroll was created in Ancona as well.

A separate benediction sheet contains blessings and liturgical poems enclosed in simple colored frames.
