    Scrolls 38 (VIII.5(B))

    Italy, Ancona

    1783 (5543)

Hand-painted border Scribe: Moses son of Joshua Nachman (משה בן יהושע נחמן) Ink and gouache on parchment, 5 membranes, 16 text columns, 24 lines per column + benediction sheet 200 × 3175 mm (7.9 × 125.0 in.) + 184 × 495 (7.2 × 19.5 in.) Wooden roller, 390 mm (15.4 in.)

The first sheet was trimmed into a decorative shape. The scroll opens with a crowned cartouche depicting the coat of arms of Nachman family; a lamp hanging on three chains and a bird (likely a dove) sitting on the lamp’s rim. The space around the cartouche is filled with flourishing vines. The text, written in square columns, is bordered with simple frames. The scroll ends with a decorative floral motif.

A separate benediction sheet is decorated in the same style as the scroll. It is divided into three parts and contains an elaborate crowned cartouche and a colophon with a Hebrew inscription. The panels on either side contain blessings and liturgical poems.
