    Esther Scroll

    Manuscript ID:
    Scrolls 43 (VII.5)

    Place:
    Italy

    Date:
Second half of the 18th century

    Description:
    Hand-painted Ink and gouache on parchment, 5 membranes, 26 text columns, 14 lines per column + benediction sheet 155 × 3772 mm (6.1 × 148.5 in.) + 167 × 297 (6.6 × 11.7 in.) Wooden roller, 310 mm (12.2 in.)

The scroll opens with floral decoration and narrow floral bands are placed between the text columns.  The upper and lower margins are simply embellished with a green and gold bar border. The edge of the first membrane has been trimmed into decorative shape and narrow strips of fabric were sewn to the very beginning of the scroll – presumably used as ties to keep the scroll rolled up.
A separate benediction sheet is decorated with the same artistic motifs as employed in the scroll. It contains three decorative panels with flowers that separate the blessings and additional texts written in two columns (Arur Haman and first verse of the liturgical hymn, Korei Megillah).
