    Manuscript ID:
    Scrolls 42 (VII.3)

    Place:
    Italy

    Date:
Second half of the 18th century

    Description:
Hand-painted border Ink and gouache on parchment, 5 membranes, 15 text columns, 19-22 lines per column 240 × 2995 mm (9.5 × 117.9 in.) Wooden roller, 440 mm (17.3 in.)

The scroll features hand painted decorations. The upper margin is decorated with a floral pattern and floral motifs were also used to separate the text columns. The first word of the text is written in enlarged letters.  The lower margin is filled narrative scenes and images of the heroes of the story accompanied by descriptive Hebrew texts.  Inscriptions in Latin characters are visible on the first three illustrations.  Below most of the text columns (except for the columns nos.: 13-15) are two or three narrative scenes (not all are shown in chronological order.) The last membrane is slightly different than the other as it does not contain illustrations on the bottom margin and is decorated with flowers.
