Jonathan Eybeschuetz (d. 1764) was a famed scholar of Talmud, Jewish law, and kabbalah. He was dayan in Prague, then rabbi in Metz, and later rabbi in Hamburg, Altona, and Wandsbeck. His later life was dogged by suspicions of Sabbatean sympathies. This manuscript contains his novellae on Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah. There are four distinct hands, one of which may well have been Eybeschuetz’s own. Two copyists are named: Moses ben Jacob Shapira Edels who copied the text at the direction of Jehiel Mikhal Eybeschuetz, the author’s son, and dated 1748. The other is Hanokh Aryeh ben Eliakim Götz of Geuchtwangen, working “in the gaon’s house,” namely, Altona.
