Esther Scroll
Manuscript ID:
Scrolls 23 (VII.8)
Place:
Italy
Date:
Ca. 1740
Description:
Hand-drawn and painted border; unsigned but bears close relationship to the work of Aryeh Leib son of Daniel of Goray (Goraj, Poland) (אריה ליב בן דניאל מגורייא) Ink and gouache on parchment, 4 membranes, 16 text columns, 27 lines per column 300 × 2380 mm (11.8 × 93.7 in.)
English Text:
The scroll contains hand-drawn border in sepia ink. In the upper margin are pairs of mermen, mermaids (some of them they are twin-tailed) or lions with fish tails. They are facing each other and are holding roundels. The text columns are enframed and the spaces between them are profusely filled with a variety of decorative elements including: a vase with flowers, elaborate plant forms, a bird and a putti holding a basket with flowers over its head. The figures of putti appear to be based on those from the popular Amsterdam printed scrolls of Esther created in the first decades of the 18th century (for example scroll #49 in the HUC Collection).
