    Esther Scroll

    Manuscript ID:
    Scrolls 41 (V.4)

    Place:
    Italy

    Date:
Second half of the 18th century

    Description:
Hand-painted Ink and gouache on parchment, 3 membranes, 19 text columns, 22 lines per column + benediction sheet 160 × 1600 mm (6.3 × 63.0 in.) Turned wooden roller, 380 mm (15.0 in.)

The scroll is profusely decorated with the borders hand-drawn in pen and ink. It opens with decorative floral pattern and coat of arms placed in the center.  The opening of the scroll is in poor condition and only parts of the Hebrew inscription can still be read. The decoration consists of pillars and geometric patterns enclosed in panels with zigzags. The same decoration repeats on the upper and lower margins, and throughout all membranes. Two text columns are enclosed in decorative frames separated by interlaced patterns that form quasi-columns, decorated with small flowers. The scroll ends with a decorative element  similar to that found in the first membrane, an oval frame with the head of the blindfolded Moor which is the Jachia (יחייא) family coat of arms. The Hebrew inscription that surrounds the emblem also notes that this image is the family emblem of the Jachia family:

אבן יעיש דגל לאותות בית אב משפחת בני יחייא להווה ע”ש השר דון יחייא שהיה מגזע
