    Hand-painted opening decoration; Joseph Shabtay son of L… (יוסף שבתי בן לא...) Ink and gouache on parchment, 4 membranes, 12 text columns, 34 lines per column 390 × 2525 mm (15.4 × 99.4 in.) Turned wooden roller, 655 mm (25.8 in.)


    The opening panel of this scroll has been damaged in several places and its lower portion is missing. It contains floral imagery and a decorative cartouche with a coat of arms depicting a lion standing on a hill (or hills). Above the frame that encloses the decoration, a short inscription in Hebrew square characters is visible: אני יוסף שבתי בן לא…, [I Joseph Shabbtai the son of…] the rest of it is indiscernible. Another one: בלאא משה… ז”ל, [the son of Moses] written in Hebrew semi-cursive script, is placed in the lower part of cartouche.
